Draven and I are swapping blogs today – she has mine and I have hers. Wow. So you’d better come over and say hi to her at my place: www.morticiaknight.blogspot.com
And because we understand that it’s a lot of work to click on another site link – we want to offer you a special giveaway for your time. Make sure you comment both here and at my blog (with contact info please!) to be entered into a drawing to receive one e-book from each of us. The giveaway will go for a week from today – then we will pick a winner from random.org and announce it at our blogs.
What should you comment about you ask? Well, comment here about who your fantasy man in uniform threesome would be. Okay, I’ll go first. I’m fairly predictable when it comes to Eric Bana from Black Hawk Down, since I can never shut up about him. But to spice things up (and necessitate the use of a time machine) I would add fire chief Steve McQueen from The Towering Inferno.
My latest homage to men in uniform is Guarded Desires (Uniform Encounters 4). In this story, Joseph Pirelli is a twenty-two year old National Guardsman. He is sent to the border to help the patrol protect the citizens and agents from a vicious Mexican drug cartel. While there, he meets an older hunky bear, DEA Special Agent, Stephen Morris. Despite being incredibly attracted to him, there are very real concerns about them becoming involved. Joseph was horribly abused for two years at the hands of a similar bear-like man. Even though it’s obvious that the goofy, fun-loving agent is nothing like his abuser, Joseph is still frightened. Pretty soon, things take a dark turn into real danger and they might not ever be able to find out whether they have a chance together.
In this excerpt, Joseph is the last guest at a barbeque at Stephen’s house. Stephen picks this moment to finally make his move on Joseph, completely unaware of how the young man is going to react due to his abusive past.
From Guarded Desires (Uniform Encounters 4)
“You don’t have to do all that. I promise I didn’t invite you over to be my servant.” Stephen chuckled. “I’ve been ordering you around all day.”
Joseph turned to the gorgeous form of Stephen, the man he could never allow himself to have, and gave him a weak smile. “That’s okay. It’s part of my job description. I’m used to it.”
An odd look passed over Stephen’s face, and Joseph wondered what was going on inside his head.
“Everything all right, Joseph?”
That gave him pause. He was certain that Stephen had never said his name before. It had been ‘kid’, ‘Pirelli’, but not Joseph.
He had to look away. His heart raced and his palms had a clammy, sweaty feel. He rubbed his hands together, fruitlessly attempting to get them dry. Joseph gazed around the nice, tidy yard. There was a small patch of grass that must have been a bitch to keep going in the summer. The back area was all dirt where he’d played with Rigo’s boys. A ten by twelve cement foundation at the base of the kitchen steps outside the sliding door held the grill and a four chair outdoor set. Two redwood benches edged the patio, with terracotta pots filled with varying cacti at the ends of each one. It epitomised the feeling of home.
“Everything’s fine. And I don’t mind helping.”
Joseph purposely glanced down as he gathered the remnants of trash and discarded cans and bottles. The sensation that Stephen eyed his every move was something he couldn’t shake. He didn’t dare check to see if he actually was watching—all resolve would give away otherwise.
I have to get the fuck out of here. I can always get a taxi.
Joseph set the items he’d brought in down on the white-tiled counter. He turned to ask Stephen a question. “Do you have a recycling—?”
Joseph’s breath caught in his throat. Stephen was right there. Right in front of him. So close that if either one of them moved forward in the slightest, their belt buckles would’ve clanged together. This time, Joseph was unable to look away. Stephen stared down at him, his hazel eyes filled with promise. The bulk of the gorgeous man intimidated and aroused him all at the same time.
Lifting only one hand, Stephen brought it slowly to Joseph’s cheek and let it rest there. Swallowing hard, Joseph barely managed to keep from flinching. He saw the flicker of concern in Stephen’s expression, the golden flecks of his irises suddenly very predominant.
Do they change colour with his moods?
It was an odd thought, but he didn’t know how to respond to a touch so gentle. It was foreign, almost scary. Joseph pressed his lips together, suddenly terrified that Stephen would try to kiss him. Simultaneously, he was sure he would die if Stephen didn’t. The agent stroked his cheek with his thumb, soft and slow.
“I know you’ve been through a lot already for someone so young. But if you like me even a fraction as much as I like you, I was hoping you might want us to get to know one another better. I would never hurt you.”
Okay. Wasn’t prepared for that.
Could he? Was there any room inside him for trust?
“I…I want to.”
What am I saying?
“I mean, get to know each other.”
Stephen bent his head and Joseph realised too late that Stephen meant to kiss him. Thin, strong lips captured his and Stephen softly prodded Joseph’s mouth open, sliding his tongue inside. Soothing caresses swept through his mouth, and the kiss deepened as Stephen slid a muscled arm around Joseph’s waist, pulling him close.
Stephen tightened his embrace and adrenaline shot through Joseph. He pushed at Stephen’s broad shoulders, panic taking hold.
He’s too strong. I have no control.
Taking a step forward, Stephen had him completely blocked in and trapped against the counter. Joseph squirmed in Stephen’s hold, breaking the kiss.
Stephen immediately backed away, dropping his arms and straightening up. Joseph’s breathing came in gasps and he shook. He lifted his gaze to Stephen’s face and could see how contrite he appeared.
“I’m so sorry, Joseph. I thought you… I must have misunderstood.”
Closing his eyes, Joseph willed himself to calm down. The brief moment that the man had held and kissed him had been sweeter and more wonderful than any physical interaction he’d ever had.
And I fucked it all up. This will never work out.
Shaking his head, Joseph opened his eyes again. Stephen had stepped even farther back. He was no longer within reach.
“You didn’t misunderstand. But I have to go.”
He turned and walked briskly through the living room, and once he’d pushed the screen door open, he jogged away as fast as he could. He had barely heard Stephen yelling out for him to wait, that he would give him a ride. Joseph didn’t trust himself any more than he trusted Stephen.
